Dating Partner and Holiday Gift Giving

Relationship experts say that more dating breakups happen just after the holidays than any time of the year. It all has to do with the kind of gift one partner received from the other. So, what are you giving your mate this Christmas?

As shallow as this may sound, it really does matter what gift one partner gives the other. The saying goes that it is the thought that counts, but there is always a subtext involved. This is more true for for women versus men. If she does not like what she reads into the gift or is not pleased that her boyfriend did not get the subtext of her gift, suffice to say that arguments happen. And when big arguments happen, well, one may as well say goodbye to the other.

Given that there is always a subtext involved with the kind of present a person gets from a companion, the gift you should give him or her should be something that reflects how well you know them, how you honestly feel about the relationship, and how you believe the relationship should proceed.

So, let us say that the two of you are still getting to know one another and you do not feel that you know each other well enough to go to the next step towards deeper commitment. In this case, it is okay to give a present that is well thought of and shows how much effort you are putting into knowing them more.

If the two of you have been seeing each other for some time and you feel that the relationship should progress to the next level – like engagement – give a gift that says exactly that. Many marriage proposals happen during the holidays, too.

If the two of you have been married for a long time, then the gift you should give your spouse is something that shows how much you cherish your marriage. You could give a gift that rekindles fond memories of the past.

But whatever you do, do not give your mate something as impersonal as a gift card. No matter how expensive that gift card is worth, it is nonetheless tacky and tasteless. It is a relationship-breaker rather than a relationship-builder.
